The euro fell as Fitch Ratings stripped Spain of its AAA credit grade, adding to concern the region’s sovereign-debt crisis will worsen and undermine the global recovery.

“The downgrade is an appropriate response to the fiscal situation Spain finds itself in,” said Richard Franulovich, a senior currency strategist at Westpac Banking Corp. in New York. “It’s yet another reminder of the volatile and unpredictable market we’re in and why the euro’s on its back foot.”

The euro declined 0.5 percent to $1.2304 at 1:09 p.m. in New York from $1.2362. The currency has fallen 7.5 percent in May, the longest losing monthly streak since April 2000. It bought 111.72 yen, from 112.55.

The ratings company cut Spain’s grade one step to AA+ and assigned it a “stable” outlook, according to a statement from London today. Spain has held the top rating since 2003.

Spain’s parliament yesterday approved the country’s deepest budget cuts in 30 years by a single vote, casting doubt on the future of the government as Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero seeks to garner support for his 2011 budget. Spain has the third-largest budget deficit in the euro region.

“People are still fundamentally bearish longer term on the euro,” said Carl Forcheski, a director on the corporate currency sales desk at Societe Generale SA in New York. “The market has not been thrilled with how the crisis has been handled. There is still a threat that the economic recovery could be derailed.”
